Virtual author visit

Image
What an amazing experience the children in year 5 had as they met Katherine Rundell live. This event was run by Waterstones as their book of the  month is Katherine’s new book : Impossible Creatures. . Katherine talked about how she became an author and what truly inspired her. She loves food and this inspired her writing. Whilst in the Amazon she tasted lots of different foods such as paranahs. Katherine says that good writers need to talk about foods in their writing as it brings the story to life and people can relate to the characters. She was so inspirational that all the children and adults were mesmerised.

What are time zones?

Image
This week, the children were introduced to time zones. They talked about how they have family in different parts of the world and they need to think about the time difference when they ring them. They recapped how the world rotates around the sun to make day and night and how the times will be different in the world. Then the children used a time zone map to identify the different lines of longitude which split the world into different time zones. The Prime Meridian is where the time zones begins, this means that the countries to the east of us will be ahead of us (in time). Whereas, the countries to the west of us will be behind us in time.  To consolidate their learning, the children used live links to compare what is happening in different parts of the world.

World Book Day

What a great start to World Book Day, as everybody took part in an African drumming workshop with Andy. The children learnt how the instruments are made using natural resources from Africa.  This is a Djemba. Andy brought other instruments such as: Bongo, Gingin, Gumbe and Boogadoo Each child was given the opportunity to play the different instruments and at the end they used the different beats on the instruments and composed a song. It sounded great! The children were also taught how to say hello and goodbye: Jambe, as well as thank you: JerryJeff.  Afterwards, they followed a Puffin online story makers show. The question posed to us was, ‘Are there rainbows in space?’ Yes is the answer. What do you think they will look like? Some children thought they would look the same. Others, thought they would be darker colours, faded.  Later, the children followed a draw-a-long, drawing brilliant brains: Albert Einstein and Greta Thunberg. Some interesting ones drawn. What ...

The Explorer

Image
Over the past few weeks the children have loved reading our text driver ‘The Explorer’. A group of children crash land into the Amazon Jungle where they face many problems as they try to find their way home.  Firstly, they wrote a diary entry from the point of view of a character from the book. The children needed to use the correct features as well as the taught punctuation elements.  This week, the children have finished writing a fact file about the Amazon Jungle. The audience will be Year 3, who will be studying rainforests in the summer term. Using their research skills as well as colons, subordinating clauses and other taught elements the children created their best pieces of writing so far this year. Well done to you all.

Create a Graphic Score - flight

Image
Year 5 worked hard this afternoon on exploring graphic scores and how they work. They listened to The Flight of the Bumblebee and we talked about what parts of the music they thought represented the bee. They then had to choose either a bee or a bird (a hawk, a robin or a parrot) to write their own graphic scores demonstrating the flight of their chosen creature. Next week they will try using instruments to play their compositions.
