Isle of Wight Library Service

Image
Adam from the Isle of Wight library service came in to introduce the summer reading scheme to the children. The children will need to sign up for the scheme:gadgeteers. There are stickers, games and a gift each time you visit. Each child must read 6 books over the summer.  Once the children have visited three times they will be given a certificate and a medal. All the library asks is that the children write a review of one of the books they have read by 17th September. These reviews will be read by the staff at the libraries and put into a prize draw for the children to win book tokens. 😊 If you have any queries, please contact Cowes library on 01983 293341 or visit the Supporters of Cowes Library on Facebook.

PSHE - writing to alien’s.

Image
This week the children were given a task to write a letter to an alien describing how diverse planet Earth is. The alien comes from a planet where everybody is identical.  As a class the children made a list of differences found in the world.  Using their ideas, they wrote their letters.

French: mercredi 13 juillet 2022: to write sentences describing the the planets

Year 5 practised all the vocabulary they have learnt in this topic on Planets. They then used given sentence structures to write their own sentences.

TRANSITION DAY

Image
Today, Year 5 were welcomed toVentnor Class and Osborne Class bt Mr Lines and Mrs McQueen as part of their transition to Year 6. We spent time agreeing some non-negotiabes to allow a smoother start in September and answered a fw of their questions about Year 6. We then discussed some of the things they are lookng forward to over the next year - this then helped us in an art activity. After dinner, we chose our first class readers and then we all came together for a stem activity of building a structure out of spaghetti and marshmellows! We all had a great day and are looking forward to see what next year brings!

Maths - Area is shapes

Image
This week the children have focussed on finding the area of a shape. First, the children recapped how to find the area through adding the squares inside of a shape. Then, they looked at a more efficient way of calculating by multiplying the length by the width. From there, they investigated how to find the area of compound shapes by breaking up the shapes into easier chunks. Some interesting ideas!   On Friday the children carried out an investigation using different sized squares, which they had to fit together like a jigsaw and then work out its area. Not as easy as it sounds believe me.
