ENGLISH - To write a character description

Image
Today, Year 5 had an opportunity to write a character description of the old man in The Tin Forest. We don’t know much about him yet, but we’ve tried to work out how he might be feeling and how he does things just by four different pictures of him. We have also looked at his appearance, his clothes and tried to guess more details about him.  Our biggest challenge was using a range of different sentence starts with the help of DADWAVERS (description, action, dialogue, where, adverbs, verbs, estimation of time, rhetorical questions and similes).   We then had a few minutes at the end to edit and make sure we have a range of openers, punctuation and vocabulary.

Geography - Organic or Non-Organic

Image
What a great lesson as the children discussed what organic means and why people choose to buy them. To support their learning they watched a short clip to identify the strict guidelines that must be met for foods to be classed as organic.  The children then carried out a taste test. Here, they tried 2 types of chocolate and 2 types of bananas. The children the food and needed to decide which was organic and which wasn’t . Mrs Gregory then told the children the price of each item and the children were shocked as to the cost of organic food.

COMPUTING - Grouping a Database

Image
In today's computing lesson, Year 5 looked at how we sort and group data in a computer database. They understood why we might want to group data, and answered questions based on the information that they interrogated. They were then able to sort the data in order, to make it easier to interpret. We talked about how this was a benefit of computer databases over the paper based alternative.
